Boondock Saints Becoming a Game

February 28, 2012 by Joe Ryan

And shepherd’s we shall be….

Yesterday, I got to talk a bit about my favorite television show, and how they are in the process of creating a game about it. I figured that would be the coolest news I'd come across for a while. But, expectations are made to be blown away, and today the news has come out that Critical Mass Interactive is making a game based on one of my favorite films, The Boondock Saints.

If you aren't familiar with the film, here's a preview. After getting into a brawl with some Russian mobsters on St. Patrick's Day, Connor and Murphy Macmanus get a vision from God telling them that it is time for the criminals in the city of Boston to go, and it's up to the brothers to get rid of them. Despite having basically no practical training, they begin to wage a two-man war on organized crime in their city, with a little help from the Man upstairs.

If you don't think that sounds like a completely awesome game, then I don't really know what to tell you. As you might expect, the game will be a co-op shooter, slated for Xbox 360 and PC, with a chance of getting it on PS3 as well. The folks at Critical Mass hope that the game will be a full retail release, but may end up doing an episodic downloadable title. Critical Mass President and CEO Matt Scibilia said the cast of the film will be doing a panel at SXSW, and the game will be shown behind closed doors at PAX East, with a wider reveal at E3. He added:

“We don’t want to do a crap-ass franchise game. We’re staying true to the content. We’re looking to expand the story, not just retell the franchise.‘The Boondock Saints’ characters are so strong — the banter, the relationships between Rocco and the brothers, the Catholicism, that will all be featured in the game.”

This will likely be annoying to at least one researcher from the University of Missouri, who has been studying the way Religion is depicted so violently in games.
