Assassin’s Creed Shadows Creative Director Says You Won’t Miss Out By Playing Just One Character

February 11, 2025 by Dennis Patrick

You won’t be forced to swap between the two protagonists constantly.

Ubisoft could use a win, and they have a major game coming out into the marketplace this coming month. Assassin’s Creed Shadows was supposed to land in the marketplace already, but a few delays have pushed the game back to March of this year. Now, the creative director behind the game reveals you don’t have to swap between the two playable protagonists constantly.

Those of you keen on trying out the Assassin’s Creed Shadows game might already know that there are two protagonists. Set in 16th-century Japan, players can either take the role of a female shinobi or a male samurai. Both will be playable, as you can switch back and forth. However, you can actually play the majority of the game campaign as just one character.

We learned that creative director Jonathan Dumont spoke to Screenrant thanks to VGC. During their conversation, the question came up of how many players might be missing out if they only played through the game as one character. According to Dumont, he doesn’t think you’ll be missing out. Instead, it mainly depends on how you wish to play the game.

Both have their own unique styles, whether that’s if you wish to be more stealthy or a brute force. Still, unique questlines for each might entice you to check out each character’s gameplay. Of course, beyond that, some sections of the game will still force you into the character, so you’ll get to spend at least a little bit of time between the two.

So I don’t think you’re missing out on things too much. I think it’s more on your preference to [say], “okay, I’ll see how the game will adapt a little bit to the character if you choose one over the other.” They get individual introductions and then they get their own questline also. So that one is, let’s say Naoe, a personal questline cannot be played by Yasuke and those are two distinct things. But the core of the game can be pick your character and the game adapts. – Jonathan Dumont

At the very least, it looks like you won’t miss out on the main storyline if you mainly play as one of the characters rather than constantly swapping between the two.

As it stands, we expect Assassin’s Creed Shadows to land in the marketplace on March 20, 2025. When the game does drop, it will be available for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC platforms.
