Sonic The Hedgehog 3 Wins US Box Office

December 23, 2024 by Todd Black

With this box office haul we can rule humanity…

There was a lot of tension and anticipation over the weekend about certain events and what would happen with them. Arguably, the biggest “tension” was about a certain “clash” at the US box office. Many projections had Sonic The Hedgehog 3 getting the win, but the live-action video game adaptation had to go up against its biggest opponent ever via a Disney movie, which is known for getting big box office hauls when quality films are put out. Just look at the Thanksgiving box office if you don’t believe us. Thankfully for fans of the blue blur, Sonic and his friends raced their way to the #1 position at the US box office, and it’s not likely to be topped anytime soon.

Unsurprisingly, when the news officially broke, Sonic’s official Twitter handle decided to post the news in style:

#SonicMovie3 is the #1 movie in America! 💙⚡️🖤 NOW PLAYING only in theatres. Get tickets: https://t.co/YYd4JnX2Mr pic.twitter.com/Vk438TXBzM

— Sonic the Hedgehog (@SonicMovie) December 22, 2024

If you can’t tell, that image is actually a reference to the first game with Sonic and Shadow in it. Thus, it’s a perfect reflection of their victory. Another interesting thing to note about the “victory poster” is all that’s upon it. Not only did it get $62 million in the US, but it was certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes after getting the best score of the trilogy, fans overwhelmingly praised it via the “audience score,” and it got an “A” on CinemaScore!

So, yeah, people are loving this movie, and that’s pretty cool to see. However, over the weekend, there was some confusion about the “full victory” of Sonic The Hedgehog 3. Specifically, Disney released a tweet stating that its Mufasa prequel was the “#1 movie in the world.” Many called them out for “lying,” but the truth is a bit more nuanced than that. You see, Sonic’s new film ONLY came out in US theaters this weekend. The international viewing audience has to wait until Christmas to see the film. Thus, we’ll likely have to wait until this upcoming weekend to hear that Sonic’s title is the “#1 movie in the world.”

Regardless, it’s already made half of its production budget, and that means it’s well on its way to being a profitable film. Just as important, Paramount has already confirmed the fourth film in the line. We won’t spoil the end credits scenes for those who haven’t seen the movie, but we will say that a couple of highly anticipated and requested characters will be getting the live-action treatment next time around.
