Last week, a massive video game trailer dropped. During The Game Awards, we were given our first real look into The Witcher 4. It provided some answers to questions fans have been asking. However, that’s not to say we don’t have more questions left after this initial cinematic trailer. One of which that I’m sure fans are wondering about is whether there are some canon choices from The Witcher 3 for this new installment.
CD Projekt Red’s game director, Sebastian Kalemba, and narrative director, Philipp Weber, spoke with Eurogamer. While they could not discuss the details quite yet, they shed some light on a few areas of the upcoming game. For starters, one that might pique your interest is whether there is a single canon ending to The Witcher 3. Philip Weber says they can’t reveal exactly how they will handle it, but this topic will be revealed later.
While the ending topic will be unveiled in time, Philipp did note that they are paying respect to everything that came before this game, from the books to the three Witcher games. Likewise, they want to include some of the most important choices the player has made there. These will be a part of the story, but you’ll be waiting a little longer to find out how it will be handled.
So we can’t say yet how exactly we’re going to handle it. This is something that we want to reveal later. What I can say is that we really want to respect everything that came before, that being the books by Andrzej Sapkowski and all three Witcher games, and that of course, should also include some of the most important choices the player made there. But exactly how we, you know, reveal how we handle all of these things, this will be part of the story that we tell in Polaris so I think that we have to talk about how we do it a little bit later. – Philipp Weber
Of course, another big question fans might have is the main protagonist. We know we’re playing as Ciri, and if you played The Witcher 3, you know she is pretty powerful. So, if players are taking the role of Ciri, should we expect the character to be nerfed? After all, you can’t expect to start a game with this super-powerful character and one-shot your enemies throughout the campaign.
No, we cannot tell you exactly how. But we can tell you just, like, believe us: that was one of the things, or first things, that we were solving, to make sure – the way we develop here, we do not leave anything without a clear answer. And the answer we’ll provide for sure, as soon as we let you experience the game. – Sebastian Kalemba
Sebastian Kalemba revealed that this was one of the first things the developers had to solve. It seems like they figured out a way to create a pathway where players can level Ciri up as they progress.
So, while we don’t know how exactly they are going about it, it’s reassuring that the team is taking care of how they go about these questions and ensuring there is an answer that makes sense and aligns with what came before this installment.
In other news since The Witcher 4 was unveiled we had learned the game’s map size will be comparable to The Witcher 3. Likewise, the game should be accessible to newcomers, if this is your first time stepping into this franchise.
