Sony Is Bringing AI To Its Developments

November 15, 2024 by Andrew McKay

AI isn’t going away

Sony is trying to keep up with the times by actively engaging with AI. We saw this first with the use of the new PSSR Up-scaling used by the PlayStation 5 Pro. Now Sony is reportedly hiring machine learning engineers to help it advance its development processes.

This was first spotted by Tech4Gamers who reported that they had seen a surge in Sony’s job listings related to AI. It’s no wonder as AI has the potential to massively reduce developers workloads. The focus of AI in this regard will be to detect bugs and errors in game code. Hopefully reducing development time.

Sony has started actively hiring engineers with expertise in machine learning to bolster its gaming development capabilities. This approach aligns with Sony’s broader strategy of integrating AI-driven technologies across its platforms. We’ve all read about how Sony has begun using Ai-based upscaling to enhance graphics, helping to render games in 4k like quality. Without the computational requirements. In time this may give the PlayStation a competitive edge over rivals like the Xbox Series X/S. It’s worth noting that Microsoft also has their own Ai developments to draw from. Although, Microsoft’s’ implementation could come about more swiftly than Sony’s.

The roles Sony is advertising suggest a focus on AI applications for gaming development  and bug checking. This renewed Ai initiative could signal a push towards innovations like dynamic graphics optimization, smarter NPC behaviours, and immersive gameplay experiences. With AI becoming increasingly vital in gaming, these moves help Sony stay ahead of the pack for the time being.

This rapid spate of hiring reflects Sony’s commitment to staying at the forefront of technological innovation in the gaming industry. They’re consistently working to enhance the user’s experience. This move may require hiring staff now, it may lead to job losses in the future as the need for Quality Control teams slowly decreases.
