Todd Howard Explains Why Bethesda Games Are So Massive

September 30, 2024 by Carley Garcia

Sometimes, bigger really is better.

In a new interview with BAFTA, Todd Howard, the executive producer and director at Bethesda Game Studios, explains why the company’s games are always so “irresponsibly large.” Fans will likely agree with this sentiment, with Starfield taking up a whopping 125GB on PC.

“My job on the games often is to be the director, a little bit like a movie director,” Howard began. “Where you’re bringing all the parts together from the art, the cinematography, the technology that our engineers are building to bring these worlds to life.

And obviously, [there’s] all of the writing and the quest design and the level designer, and there’s so many parts to our games that I’m in a really unique position to work with so many amazing people and bring all of that together.”

Actually, we cut very little from our games at Bethesda, which is why the games are so irresponsibly large.”

The highly anticipated Shattered Space expansion for Starfield is scheduled to be released today, September 30, 2024. Those who purchased the Premium or Constellation Editions of the game will already have access, while everyone else will need to purchase it separately for $29.99.

Following its inclusion in Skyrim and Fallout 4, Bethesda introduced the Creation Club to Starfield in June, allowing players to download new quests and cosmetics to their game. Some of the included mods were developed by Bethesda, while others are developed by the community, and while some are free, others cost real money. The playerbase wasn’t thrilled about microtransactions being added to an already pricey game, but reviews for the title have seen an uptick over the past few months.
