ThatGameCompany’s Next Game Taking Online Play “A Step Further”

February 16, 2012 by Josh Harmon

A job listing indicates that the studio’s next game will include a robust online component.

ThatGameCompany's latest release, Journey, won't be out the door until next month, but that hasn't stopped the developer from turning their attention towards their next project. According to a recent hiring notice on Games Jobs Direct, the stuido already has big plans for a follow-up, including a "full scale online service".

"With our last game, Journey, we began incorporating online interactions into our projects, and we’d like to take it a step further on our next game," the listing reads. "But while we’re pretty experienced making games, we’ve never built a full scale online service available to hundreds of thousands of users. We’re looking for someone to help us plan and build our online infrastructure in a way that scales."

Journey, the studio's first online title, features an experimental co-op system that allows you to randomly encounter anonymous strangers as you make your way across the game's sprawling desert environs. You're free to team up and help each other as you see fit, but you won't have any way to communicate or discover who they are.

With a back catalogue that's brimming full of these sort of non-traditional experiences, it's a safe bet that whatever ThatGameCompany has in store for this mystery project will be just as unique.
