Mojang Doesn’t Care for Minecraft Clones, Won’t Pursue Litigation Against Plagiarists

February 15, 2012 by Ian Miles Cheong

The folks at Mojang are no fans of Minecraft clones, but they won’t sue people over it.

The developers at Mojang aren’t fans of Minecraft clones, but they’re far from litigious.

A good number of games have (arguably) ripped off or been heavily influenced by Minecraft, like FortressCraft and even Terraria to a smaller extent.

Speaking to Kotaku Australia, Mojang’s business chief Daniel Kaplan said that the company had no intention of taking legal action over FortressCraft, which is arguably the most blatant ripoff of Minecraft.

Kaplan said that these Minecraft clones bring nothing new to the table, but as long as they don’t use anything Mojang made, they don’t care.

According to Kotaku Australia, FortressCraft was the most successful game on Xbox Live Indie Games, earning more than a million dollars in revenue in September 2011.

Mojang itself isn’t a stranger to lawsuits, having been sued by Bethesda for using the word “Scrolls” as a title of one of its games.

Their stance on the matter simply proves that they’re a class act. Others could do well to emulate their mentality.
