PlayStation 5 Devkit Manages To Sell On eBay Thanks To This Trick

July 5, 2024 by Dennis Patrick

Sony probably didn’t see that one coming.

Plenty of gaming collectors out there seek out items that are hard to come by. Devkits are included in those hard-to-come-by items. These devices are never meant to get into the hands of the general public. Instead, they are meant for development teams as they build games for their eventual release. Still, you will see units of past platforms come up from time to time. However, finding these units for current-generation platforms like the PlayStation 5 is far more challenging.

Companies like Sony will work to ensure these devkits are kept off online resell markets like eBay. However, one recently sold auction went by undetected, and it was all due to a disguise. Dexerto reported this and uncovered that a PlayStation 5 devkit was sold while being advertised as a PlayStation Pizza kit.

This auction had a PlayStation 5 devkit photographed with a slice of pizza displayed on top. You can find the image from a recent post by X user consolevariations. That was all it took to slide under the radars from Sony, and it managed to sell for quite a pretty penny. The auction reportedly ended with the PlayStation 5 devkit going for $6,500. That is quite a bit of money, but again, it’s rare enough to find devkits, especially ones for current-generation platforms.

We’ll have to see if any other sneaky auctions come up again to flip devkits without being detected by Sony. But now that this has gained some attention online, it might be a bit harder to pull off. Still, that is at least one way to sell a devkit. We imagine it would have gone for even more money if more collectors had been aware that this unit was available for bids, but that would have likely prompted Sony to step in and end things.
