Evolving a Genre: Velocity

February 10, 2012 by Mat Growcott

New PlayStation Mini from Coconut Dodge developer FuturLab could change the way Shoot ‘Em Ups are played entirely.

It's a fairly rare thing to see people getting excited about a PlayStation Mini, but it's definitely happening here. Previously the brand has been something of a mixed bag, taking in both the best and the worst of the iOS market and a few original titles, again of varying quality. It's fair to say that perhaps one of the most respected Minis is Coconut Dodge, developed by FuturLab. The game also saw a popular EA-published release on iOS.

So the fact that Velocity, FuturLab's second Minis title, is coming out over the next few weeks should be pretty big news for PSP (and PS3) owners, but the fact that it evolves the Shoot 'Em Up genre and that you can get it free on PlayStation Plus makes it a must play title. With Joris de Man, Killzone 2 and 3 composer, handling the music and gameplay based around teleportation, you'll need quick reflexes and the ability to think on your feet if you're going to get the top scores.

Velocity will be available in both the EU and US territories for free on PlayStation Plus in March, and should work with the Vita at release.
