There’s an interesting new rumor about an upcoming Marvel video game, that nobody seems to have seen coming.
As reported by TheStreamr, who claimed to have their own sources, they corroborated and denied some elements of a rumor about this game from Kurakasis. While we can’t corroborate either of these sources, we will focus on TheStreamr as they have more information.
As we had indicated in the title, this game will be a 6v6 shooter in the mold of Overwatch, and adopting a Valorant style aesthetic. However, it will not be first person, but third person perspective.
This does not come from TheStreamr, but we believe this decision may have been done for two reasons. For one, it makes the game easier to play in third person, and so they may be looking for a more casual audience. Secondly, of course, they want players to see the characters they are playing. That’s natural for a license like Marvel.
TheStreamr won’t confirm that alleged game title Marvel Rivals, which came from Kurakasis. However, they will confirm the developer as NetEase Games. NetEase already makes Marvel Super War and Marvel Duel with Marvel.
Netease is best known for making mobile and online PC games, so it looks like this Marvel title is an online PC game. That may mean this game isn’t planned for consoles, but if it becomes a success upon release, maybe that can change later.
And now comes the fun part, as TheStreamr shares the initial planned cast of playable heroes. They are:
- Doctor Strange
- Scarlet Witch
- Iron Man
- Luna Snow
- Punisher
- Rocket
- Groot
- Loki
- Spider-Man
- Hulk
- Magik
- Magneto
- Mantis
- Storm
- Peni Parker
- Black Panther
- Star Lord
- Namor
- Thor
As you can see, the characters come from across the Marvel universe, but lean more on the more superpowered characters, instead of the street smart down to earth characters.
Their design seems to be basic, or perhaps the correct word is, preliminary at this time. Rumored game modes are Escort and King of the Hill, which I’m sure will thrill everyone reading this. Potential maps include Odin’s Vault, a real world city that isn’t New York, and an island location in Marvel lore.
The last thing TheStreamr tells us is that this game is in pre-alpha for now. Netease’s plan is apparently to launch sometime in the next year, possibly around Q3 2025.
If all of this is true, Netease is going to have to come up with something better than Overwatch with crossover characters, for this game to succeed. Maybe that’s what they do intend to work on, in which case they have a little over a year to prepare it for us to check out for ourselves.
