First Sonic Superstars Reviews Praises SEGA’s Return To 2D

October 11, 2023 by Todd Black

A nostalgic and fresh title.

The next nine days will be very interesting for video game fans, as two significant AAA titles will be coming out a few days from one another. You might recall that a certain game with Mario will be heading to the Switch soon, but a multi-platform game with Sonic The Hedgehog will be racing out just before then. Sonic Superstars looks to be a “return to form” for the blue blur, and many were wondering if SEGA would be able to stick the landing and deliver the fun and fast nostalgia of the old days. The game’s first review seems to imply that they did just that.

That first review came from Famitsu, where their group ranking system gave Sonic Superstars a 32/40, or an 8/10 to make it simpler. That means it’s a really good title and that all four members of the Famitsu staff enjoyed it for various reasons. But what did they specifically say about it?

Well, according to the one who posted the reviews online, they felt it was an “evolution” of the classic titles Sonic had in the earlier SEGA console generations that helped launch his character. While there are plenty of new elements for gamers to enjoy, it will feel like a nostalgic trip down memory lane, which many will enjoy hearing.

They also said that the title is fun to play, and yet there are difficult sections with the levels, so it’s not going to be a cakewalk to beat. Ironically, one of the biggest negative points for the title was that there wasn’t any voice acting in the game. Many will note that this harkens back to the original games when Sonic and friends didn’t talk. However, many would also say that this would’ve been a good time to bring in voice acting to “evolve” the game further.

But even with that flaw, the game seems to be a welcome return to the older days when Sonic was truly about going fast and taking out enemies at high speed while he tried to fool Dr. Eggman. We’ll find out on October 17th just how much it was worth it.

Here’s the official synopsis for the game: “Sonic and his friends’ journey starts on the beautiful North Star Islands, a mystical place offering never-before-seen environments, as well as a mysterious story waiting to unfold. Enormous creatures, exhilarating adventures, and evil plans from Dr Eggman await Sonic and his friends, who can now obtain brand-new abilities known as the Emerald Powers when Chaos Emeralds are collected.”
