The Old Republic Will be Getting a Graphical Update

January 31, 2012 by Lyle Smith

A "cinematic like texture" option is in development.

BioWare has announced that The Old Republic will be getting a "cinematic like texture" graphical enhancement option. Ever since they took out the Higher Res option at launch (which can only be seen during cinematic scenes), along with abundant graphical bugs, the player base has been asking for an upgrade of sorts.

Meanwhile, Associate Project Manager Avi Mintz has released a guide on how to fix some of these issues.

"We are looking forward to collaborating with you to make this game a fantastic journey and a memorable experience for all involved. Our texture options are High / Low. We are planning an additional setting for character textures, closer to the quality seen in cinematic scenes, which is under development right now."

Here’s a rundown of what was said:

  • Any option may bottleneck a PC. In order to find the best balance, it is best to turn everything to low then turn each option up in turn.
  • Turning Min-spec shading on and turning shadows off is likely to greatly improve FPS issues.
  • Anti-aliasing is particularly taxing on a system, and it is recommended to turn it off when running a video card with less than 1GB of memory. (Anti-aliasing is temporarily disabled for AMD 6900 series graphics cards, due to severe graphical artifacts. Bioware are working to resolve this asap.)
  • Playing the game in full-screen offers the best FPS, but at the cost of much slower tabbing into and out of the game.
  • Some mobile graphics cards might not set their performance profile while running SW:TOR. You can fix this by manually setting up a profile in the graphics control panel.
  • Disabling Windows Aero may improve performance.
  • Shutting down background programs can only help.

It also requests users to go to this forum and report any glitches that that may occur.
