A BioWare artist has revealed new images of Mass Effect Andromeda’s protagonist that show off the character in a level of detail we haven’t seen before.
The character is referred to as the “Pathfinder” and the images were posted online by senior character artist Furio Tedeschi from BioWare Montreal.
“Our Pathfinder character model at BioWare Montreal… for Mass Effect Andromeda,” Tedeschi wrote. The actual work on the model comes from Herbert Lowis, another artist.
While this isn’t the first time we’ve seen the game’s main new character, these images are out best look at them yet. The Pathfinder is customisable, as was the case for Commander Shepard in the original Mass Effect Trilogy, and can be a man or a woman. However, the character can only be a human. Like Shepard, they’re an N7 operative, meaning they’ve achieved the highest rank in the Alliance military’s special forces program.
Generically-titled protagonist have been a staple of BioWare’s Dragon Age series, which has included the Hero of Ferelden, the Champion of Kirkwall, and the Inquisitor.
BioWare has been quiet about what to expect from the game but fans believe the character may be called Ryder. As was the case with Shepard and the Dragon Age protagonists, the Pathfinder’s first name will presumably be customisable. The Pathfinder is part of the mission to explore the Andromeda Galaxy using an Arc ship to make the journey.
EA’s CFO announced earlier this week that Mass Effect Andromeda will be released during the fourth quarter of the financial year, meaning it will launch at some point between January 1st, 2017 and March 31st, 2017. The game is likely coming to PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
