Poke-Themed Splatoon 3 Splatfest Ends With Team Water-Type Winning!

November 14, 2022 by Todd Black

A sign of things to come?

Splatoon 3 has been on a roll since its launch in September. As you may have heard, it’s sold record amounts of units worldwide and continues bringing new players into the game each week. But just as important, the team knows that they need to keep players coming back for significant events to have lots of fun in. That’s why the Splatfests are so important. These special events are one of the highlights of the franchise. Over the past weekend, they arguably had their most significant and surprising Splatfest ever via the Pokemon triple threat event!

To recap, to celebrate the upcoming launch of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, the theme of the Splatfest was “Team Grass-Type vs. Team Fire-Type vs. Team Water-Type.” That references the starters you get at the beginning of every mainline title you have to choose from. There have been many debates about which starters are the best over the years. Do you go with the ones that’ll make things easier for you to start the game, like with Bulbasaur in Gen 1? Or do you go with the Pokemon with the coolest final evolution, like Froakie in Gen 6? The choice has divided many over the years, so it was time to “settle it in splat!”

But the twist, as noted by the official Twitter handle, is that Team Water-Type won in a sweep!

With a flawless 45p score, #TeamWater hits like a Hydro Pump and captures the #Splatfest win!

Why is this a twist? Simply put, these Splatfests rarely end in a sweep. After all, the points are determined by three different factors. Popularity, and then wins in two different categories of gameplay. So the odds would have to be severely in one side’s favor to get the full sweep. Not to mention, this debate amongst Pokemon fans is as heated as the Fire-Type starters themselves. So you’d swear that at least two teams would get points, but not so. Team Water-Type won handily, and that says something.

Something that Splatoon 3 fans will be happy about, though, is that Shiver is now 2-1 in Splatfests. She won the first two and had to eat a Grass-Type crow this time. Fans will also be happy about the massive update on the “Chill Season.” It’s launching on December 1st and will feature new gear, emotes, stages, the return of X Battles, and a further tease of Big Run! A lot is coming to the game soon.

Meanwhile, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet will arrive on November 18th for the Nintendo Switch.
