In a new interview, a Microsoft higher up has revealed that Redfall will be releasing before Starfield.
No less than Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty revealed that as he was looking forward to Redfall’s release, as he “looks down the road on the calendar”, Starfield will be releasing after it. Matt did not give any specific dates, and he did not indicate any delay or advance in either game’s development or release schedule.
Last May, Bethesda Game Studios revealed that they had to delay both games. At the time, they cited the need to ensure polish and the need to meet the company’s ambitions as the reason for the delays. So far, they have stuck to the release date from this announcement.
It will be helpful to review what kind of games Redfall and Starfield are. Redfall is an open world co-op shooter from Arkane Studios, the developers of the Dishonored franchise, Prey, and the recently released Deadloop. In Redfall, Massachusetts, a science experiment that creates a horde of vampires goes wrong. The vampires take over the town, and go so far as to block out the sun, meaning they have constant control of the town. You and your vampire hunting buddies will not only be fighting the vampires themselves, but also the cult that have emerged to worship them and follow their every word.
Starfield is a space exploration game from Bethesda Game Studios. The space exploration genre includes gigantic open worlds like Elite Dangerous, No Man’s Sky, and the still unfinished Star Citizen. These games have evolved from exploring an expansive space with an infinitesimal amount of planets to explore, to allow you to fine pick every single aspect of gameplay, down to the minute details of the ship that you run with.
If you consider that Bethesda Game Studios, who created genre defining worlds in Fallout and The Elder Scrolls, are now setting their minds to a space exploration game, you can imagine that Bethesda has big plans to remold the genre in their own image, with new ideas that hadn’t even been explored before.
With all this in mind, it stands to reason that Redfall would be ready before Starfield. This isn’t a matter of Redfall being a lesser game, so much as it is about Starfield being a considerably larger project, that is potentially worth hundreds of hours more. I’m sure Xbox gamers won’t mind spending a few months vampire slaying with their friends before they jump into that giant world.
Based on prior confirmed reporting, Redfall and Starfield will be released in the first half of 2023. Both games are planned for release on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and Windows.
