It’s certainly been a long time in the making, but it seems as though PlayStation gamers will soon be able to make use of Discord on their consoles. According to new reports, PlayStation platforms will be getting full Discord integration fairly soon. To be more specific, PlayStation gamers should expect the implementation of Discord to be in place on March 8, 2023.
That’s according to industry insider Tom Henderson at Insider Gaming, whose latest report refers to his sources’ latest understanding of the planned integration. Discord will be rolled out onto PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 consoles as part of the planned version 7.00 Update for the PlayStation 5 in March next year. Apparently, Henderson’s sources have shared this information to clarify the situation after an update to Discord’s mobile app last week showed options for both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 integration within the settings.
While it’s interesting to note that the reported integration of Discord on PlayStation will come on March 8 as part of Update 7.00, it may be that Sony is planning to roll this out sooner, if the recent changes within the Discord app are anything to go by. It’s also worth noting that it looks as though PlayStation 4 gamers will miss out on the full functionality of Discord on their platform. While PlayStation 4 players will be able to display the name of the game they’re currently playing within Discord, they won’t be able to make use of its key feature of voice chat. PlayStation 5 gamers will be able to access the service’s voice chat in full though, which is probably the key reason many gamers have been so keen to see Discord arrive on consoles in the first place. It seems a shame to exclude PlayStation 4 gamers from the full scope of Discord’s capabilities, but it may be something that Sony gets to work on if there’s enough demand for it in future.
The popular instant messaging and voice-chat functions of Discord have been a staple of many gaming communities for a long time. However, it is only recently that we’ve finally seen their usage on console platforms. Most recently, Xbox made Discord fully available on their platform, including those on the previous console generation. This has meant that the use of voice chat when cross-platform gaming has become much less of an issue for those playing online together. With the reported integration of the service into PlayStation platforms, things can only get better in this regard.
We’ll be watching this space for further updates on the upcoming rollout of Discord across the PlayStation console platforms. Otherwise, it’ll be a case of waiting to see what happens next March, if there’s no further news beforehand.
