Sega announced today that Phantasy Star Online 2, the Japanese MMORPG, will officially launch on PlayStation 4 in Japan only on April 20, 2016 (via Siliconera and 4Gamer).
Players will be able to sign up, through the PlayStation Store, for the closed beta from January 25-Februay 15. This beta is limited to 50,000 spots however, and signups will close once all slots have been filled. The beta itself will run from February 25 through March 6.
Those who are able to participate in the closed beta will also have the opportunity for special in-game items once the game officially launches, so long as they reach certain levels within the beta. There’s also a promotion for a “Episode 4 deluxe package,” which will be available for PS4, PS Vita, and PC, for 4,900 Yen, or $41.75 USD.
Phantasy Star Online 2 was originally released for the PC in 2012, with a PS Vita version launching the year after. In 2014, a spinoff title released on iOS and Android. It should be noted all of these versions are Japan only. However, it was made apparent last summer that the game is available to western players who go to the Japanese site to download the game. Hopefully, fans of the title in the west will be able to get official launches in the future.
