It’s no secret that Undertale has slowly built a ravenous, cult-like following since its release last September. One intrepid fan has created a 3D mod for the game (via Siliconera).
The mod, created by Russian developer Edik Zykov, turns only certain segments of the game into a three dimensional experience. The sections that are turned to 3D will be considered part of a custom adventure, where a mysterious entity converts the game to 3D for unknown reasons. For those that have played the game, that seems like something that would be thematically in line with what Undertale attempts to do. The game is famous for remembering player choices, even if they reset back to the beginning.
Fan mods and creations can sometimes spawn entire new games themselves, like Gary’s Mod, the attempts to turn the original Pokemon games to 3D, and more recent projects like the PC-only Super Mario ReMaker. It may only be a matter of time before another developer turns all of Undertale 3D, with their own twist.
The game, along with several other AAA and indie titles, received three nominations for this year’s D.I.C.E. awards.
