Embracer Sets Sights High For Tomb Raider and Other Titles

May 20, 2022 by John McDonald

It could be the beginning of something amazing.

We were hit with some big news earlier in the month, that Embracer Group had acquired the Square Enix company and several of its assets in a deal worth around $300 million, meaning they now have control of famous titles like Tomb Raider and Deus Ex. You might be thinking that the figure mentioned is a little on the low side – it really was quite a coup for the Swedish holding company. Embracer mentioned that they expect the transaction between the two holding companies to close between July and September.

Now, Embracer has released its financial report and highlighted that it has huge hopes for the future after this buyout. The company has discussed the possibility of developing potential remakes of the classic titles that were once under Square Enix’s control. A spokesperson from Embracer said, “after the end of the quarter, we further strengthened our development capabilities and IP portfolio by entering into an agreement to acquire Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montreal, and Square Enix Montreal, including Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Thief, and Legacy of Kain, as well as other IPs.”

The company spokesperson went on to say, “We see great potential, not only in sequels but also in remakes, remasters, spinoffs, as well as transmedia projects across the Group.” We think we speak for everyone when we say more remakes of old gamers are just what we need.

As expected though, we are some way off when it comes to hearing about any potential releases, but what we do know is that Crystal Dynamics has been making plans to unite the most recent Tomb Raider trilogy with the timeline of the original games, with the next game making use of the Unreal Engine 5.

But fans of the Tomb Raider franchise should be excited regardless because, not only is there this news, but they also don’t have long to wait until the animated Netflix series comes out. You really are spoilt rotten when it comes to Lara Croft’s adventures, aren’t you?
