Guillermo Del Toro has declared that he is done trying to make games. However, he isn’t completely ungrateful or pessimistic about his experience with the industry.
Actually, he initially joked about his experience, pointing out that THQ shut down and Kojima left Konami after he associated with them. And so, he doesn’t want the next developer he works with to have their heads explode.
After that, Del Toro is more forthcoming about his experience in the industry, pointing out that he actually did learn a lot. While everyone is more familiar with his mentorship under Kojima, Del Toro points out he learned many things working on Insane with THQ as well. In fact, within the two years he worked with THQ, Del Toro says he learned many things, that changed how he approached narrative in film and TV.
Del Toro is currently working on vampire themed TV series The Strain, but says that he continues to learn from Kojima, in a personal capacity.
As of now, Del Toro also says he’s open to other developers taking on his game projects from here on in, namely Insane and Silent Hills, but he himself will no longer be involved in games.
You can watch Del Toro talk about games and other things in the interview above. His talk about games starts in 3:00.
