Destiny: Bungie Explains Why They’re Replacing Peter Dinklage

August 7, 2015 by Ian Miles Cheong

Bungie details why they’re replacing Peter Dinklage with Nolan North as the voice of Ghost.

Peter Dinklage is well regarded as an actor, portraying Tyrion Lannister in Game of Thrones. He's not so well regarded in his role as Ghost in Destiny.

Critics have largely blamed the quality of the character's writing rather than the actor himself, who seems like he's struggling to perform with many of the game's poorly, and boringly written lines, which once included the words, "That wizard came from the moon."

Nearly a year after the game's release, Bungie recently announced that they will be replacing the voice acting talents of Peter Dinklage with that of Nolan North, an actor best known for his role as Nathan Drake.

Speaking to GameSpot, Bungie's lead concept artist Jesse van Dijk explained why the studio decided to change the casting for the character. According to the interview, the studio wanted to rework the entire game to make it so that Ghost guides players more and for its quest goals to be clearer. This is called the "questification" of Destiny, and also includes an overhaul of the game's quest and bounty systems, which really aren't that great.

To do this, Bungie had to make Ghost's role more important to the player, meaning more audio monologues had to be recorded for the character.

Van Dijk doesn't really explain why they decided not to go with Dinklage again, so it's for the fans to speculate on why that is, but he said that the studio looked for a new voice actor for Ghost and eventually hired Nolan North for it.

Nolan North will be providing new dialogue to the game to go along with the quest and bounty system overhauls, as well as recording lines for the entirety of the character, replacing everything Dinklage had done.

"When we started looking at voice actors, and we decided to work with Nolan North, the consistency of the entire universe is very important to us, so we decided to give the full treatment to all of our previous content too. [This] is why Nolan North is also your Ghost from the very moment you start [the game]."

Destiny: The Taken King will launch on September 15 and bring with it a host of improvements to the core game as well as a ton of new content.
