Doom Has No Planned Co-op Or Competitive Multiplayer – But That May Change

July 26, 2015 by Ryan Parreno

Whether Bethesda was better off focusing on the campaign, or matching modern expectations is up for debate.

Bethesda has made some quirky choices for co-op in Doom. No, there will be no co-op in the story campaign, and there are other glaring omissions as well.

There will be co-op in SnapMap, but Bethesda doesn’t seem to be all that interested in coop. They don’t exactly pitch SnapMap for making coop. Instead, executive producer Marty Stratton explained that one could approximate coop using the modding utility.

You could not really make a full campaign on SnapMap, because there is no way to make levels connect to each other. Instead, SnapMap users could put levels together more like a playlist. You can connect these levels together, and give players a persistent set of weapons to use with each level.

In other news, a fan confirmed that competitive multiplayer is not planned for the game either. Bethesda did confirm that there will be a separate set of mod tools that will be made available on top of SnapMap, so if fans  want a more traditional modding experience, they can have it.

Would you prefer that Doom have campaign coop, or competitive multiplayer? Bethesda has stated that they haven’t decided to pass on these completely yet. However, they do not currently have plans for these features.

Bethesda may be focusing on the single player campaign for now, which is not a bad thing in itself, but these omissions are certainly nagging ones, given what fans expect from modern shooters.

Do you think Doom should match modern expectations and add these features in, or are we better off with a more traditional experience? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.

Doom will be released on Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in Spring 2016.
