Destiny 2 Won’t Be Supported on Steam Deck

March 2, 2022 by Carley Garcia

Bungie is ready to ban players trying to bypass the incompatibility.

The Steam Deck is finally making its way into anxious hands, with gamers now able to curl up on their couch or in their hastily-made bed to play their favorite PC titles. While a number of high-profile titles such as Elden Ring are compatible with the new handheld system, it looks like Destiny 2 fans will have to settle for sitting at their desk for the foreseeable future. The game is not supported, and those trying to bypass the incompatibility will be met with a ban.

In a new post made on the Bungie help page, the company writes this rule out in black and white.

“Destiny 2 is not supported for play on the Steam Deck or on any system utilizing Steam Play’s Proton unless Windows is installed and running. Players who attempt to launch Destiny 2 on the Steam Deck through SteamOS or Proton will be unable to enter the game and will be returned to their game library after a short time. Players who attempt to bypass Destiny 2 incompatibility will be met with a game ban.”

Many players are confused by the incompatibility. Destiny 2 is known for being one of the more forgiving shooters in terms of control scheme, playing well across PC and consoles. It’s known to use the BattlEye anti-cheat software, which Valve would have had no problem implementing, and Destiny 2 already runs on Linux, even if it doesn’t look fantastic.

Users have taken to the game’s subreddit to discuss the decision, with one user explaining that Linux’s lack of secure boot and user-configurable kernels could leave Destiny 2‘s multiplayer option wide open to cheaters. Bungie has now, however, confirmed that this was the reason behind the decision.

Destiny 2 is available to play on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Google Stadia, and PC. The game’s next expansion The Witch Queen dropped on February 22, 2022, marking both tons of new content and tons of older content being lost.
