Devil May Cry Future Unclear, Ask Again Later, Says Producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi

June 28, 2015 by Ryan Parreno

Kobayashi says the game should happen on PlayStation 4, although this does not necessarily mean other platforms are out of the question.

Capcom’s Hiroyuki Kobayashi has gone on record that the future of the Devil May Cry remains uncertain.

While newer gamers may immediately associate the game with its longtime director, Hideki Kamiya, Kobayashi has also been part of the franchise from the onset, serving as the producer for the first and fourth games. Kobayashi has worn many hats for Capcom, and is more known for his work on the Sengoku Basara series. However, it can be said he is the one Capcom executive to ask about Devil May Cry, in the same way that Yoshihori Ono is the person to ask about Street Fighter and DarkStalkers.

Kobayashi addressed this as part of an interview regarding Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition, which released just last week worldwide on Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

Kobayashi explains that there are no current plans for a new game, but he entreats fans to make themselves heard so that Capcom would know that a new installment of the game should be released. Of course, he also tells fans to buy the special edition, and they hope to make the next game for the PlayStation 4, if it ever happens. (This interview was with PlayStation, so other platforms may not be out of the question.)

Capcom is reticent to make sequels for even their more popular series for several reasons. At certain points, they have tried and failed to make inroads making games to cater to Westerners. Devil May Cry itself was subject to this experiment with the mixed reception, presumably abandoned, DmC reboot.

And then, in 2010, they reported a loss of 73 % of annual profits. Today, Capcom is on the rebound, this time focusing on digital distribution, online multiplayer, and DLC. If you think Capcom will just listen to fans, consider that former flagship characterMega Man has not had a new game in years.

We know you want it, but how do you think Capcom should go about making a new Devil May Cry game to make it worthwhile for them? Are you willing to buy an online multiplayer or DLC laden Devil May Cry game? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.
