The Elder Scrolls Onlline May be Arriving on Console Next Month

January 9, 2015 by Stephen Daly

The MMO may be heading into free-to-play territory too.

The Microsoft Store page for The Elder Scrolls Online may have revealed the game's console release date to be February 24th.

While the date has since been altered to simply say 2015, VG24/7 took a screengrab showing the February launch date. It's possible the date is simply a placeholder, but these tend to be at the end of a month or quarter and the date is a Tuesday, when most games are released in the US.

Meanwhile, Kotaku reports that all PC copies of the game are being withdrawn from Australian retailers. While it's not unusual to recall excess stock after the holidays, the fact that Bethesda is picking up every copy has led to speculation that the game is about to go free-to-play.

Bethesda may follow the example of BioWare's Star Wars: The Old Republic, which launched as a subscription based MMO before switiching to free-to-play. Subscriptions are still available for The Old Republic, and grant numerous benefits and extra content compared to the free-to-play option.
