Assassin's Creed Unity has received Patch 4 suddenly and without ceremony on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Unfortunately for Ubisoft, the 6.7 GB download has not come down well.
You can read full patch notes here, but it mainly handles several bugs, including those for frame rate drops, game crashes, losing saves, navigation, picking treasure chests, connectivity, matchmaking, and the companion app.
On the same update page, Ubi added a note that the Xbox One patch erroneously downloads the entire 40 GB game all over again instead of just the patch. This was a bug created for players who installed Patch 3. Unfortunately, it will take some time for Ubi and Microsoft to fix the error, but of course, they are both already on it.
The good news is that if you do wait out the full 40 GB download, you will get a patched version of the game with your saves intact, so if you started, it is probably best to go through with the download.
As for PlayStation 4 owners, they didn't come out of this scot free either. The framerate has been fixed for their version, but at the cost of NPC pop-in, as you can see below.
As this fan has also pointed out on a separate reddit, there are also ongoing problems with a cross platform service, Initiates.
Unfortunately, if there's anything we have learned thus far, it's that the work of patching and fixing Assassin's Creed: Unity is far from done.
