Every time I wonder about a new Metroid game, I think about Metroid: Other M and how it poisoned the franchise. Clearly, Nintendo is taking its time on reintroducing Samus Aran, but how long will we have to wait before our favorite bounty hunter gets to go back on patrol? If what Tamaki of unreleased / canceled game repository Unseen64 says is true, we could have been looking forward to a new Metroid on 3DS.
In a series of tweets, Tamaki stated:
Anywho, I have recently been privy to some cancelled Metroid stuff. I hope we can share some of that some day soon. It's a bit complicated.
He then followed up:
This is a Metroid 3DS game, to be clear.
He's trying to find the right way to share his findings, as he doesn't want to accidentally get anyone in trouble. But we can speculate on what this Metroid 3DS was.
Earlier this year, we stumbled across concept art from Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon developer Next Level Games for a brand-new Metroid game. The team even put a prototype together, but the project was unfortunately shelved. Could this be the Metroid 3DS game that Tamaki was talking about? And if so, does that mean he managed to score footage of the prototype?
