Star Citizen: Drake Cutlass Commercial, Planetside Demo Revealed

October 11, 2014 by Ryan Parreno

Chris Roberts himself shared commentary on the demo, as part of CitizenCon 2014.

Cloud Imperium Games has shared new preview footage of Star Citizen, with a new commercial for the Drake Cutlass, and a demo for the game’s persistent universe, planetside, from CitizenCon 2014. No less than Chris Roberts himself was on hand to share commentary throughout the demo

The Drake Cutlass commercial is flashy, if a little sophomoric. It does the job of demonstrating the Drake’s maneuverability and speed. As the commercial says at the end, live to your own beat with this versatile, personal space vehicle.

The demo starts with a ship launching in space. We get the traditional cockpit view, but the camera then shifts as the player character gets up from his seat to move around the ship. He walks to the cargo bay and back.

Finally, back in the captain’s seat, he gets permission to and lands on a nearby planet. The game makes some jump cuts to show off some landing animations, before control back to the player for the final approach.

Upon landing, the player gets down from the ship, and takes a few minutes to take in all the scenery. Eventually, he makes his way to the docking bay for entry procedures.

Chris explains at this point that players can go into cities to buy ship upgrades and equipment, as well as illicit goods, if you know where the city’s fringes are. Going into Dumpers Depot, Chris explains that this is where players can get used materials, repairs, etc.

The demo is a sheer force demonstration of CryEngine’s abilities, optimized by Cloud Imperium Games. It is no exaggeration to say that no other game in development or recently released can boast this much attention to detail or graphical quality.

Star Citizen’s first modules are planned for release in 2015 on Windows, followed by Mac and Linux. Check out the CitizenCon 2014 planetside demo below.
