Alien: Isolation Basic Survival Guide

October 7, 2014 by Jacob Saylor

This guide will help you survive the horrors of Alien: Isolation.

Alien: Isolation released today and gamers everywhere are redefining what horror in relation to video games means to them. No Alien game has made players feel genuinely scared of the Xenomorphs of the series until Isolation. We've come up with a list of tips to help new players find their way through the many dark passageways of the alien-ridden facilities contained within the game.

Remain unseen.

While the game is being marketed as a horror game, and some scenes are certainly horrifying, you have to treat it as a stealth title. It could be argued that the game is only a stealth title as long as you remain unseen, then switches to horror as a Xenomorph chases you around the Medical Bay.

Use your ears.

Too often we rely on what we see and not what we hear. When you can't see the aliens in the game, but can hear them, make sure to use that information to the best of your ability. A good headset here would be nice.

The motion tracker is your best friend.

As Luke Skywalker did when he took out the Death Star, use your special tools like the motion tracker but don't rely on them. While the tracker can show you hidden movement, it blinds you from every direction but the front.

Be patient.

As with any game involving stealth, players will have to learn to be patient. There's no way you're going to outrun a Xenomorph, so either take precautions before you engage with them or sit in your hiding spot until the danger has passed.

Survey your surroundings.

Most games will use triggers, where when you activate a computer or something of that nature, the game will release an enemy to come and sniff you out. If you find a predictable trigger, figure out what kind of area you are working with before activating it.

Lean out.

Make sure to use the lean function. This will give you valuable information about your enemies and won't reveal your position.

Peek in moderation.

Learning how to peek from your hiding spots is another valuable asset. Just make sure not to overuse this ability, as Xenomorphs will still be able to find you.

Know thy enemy.

Xenomorphs aren't the only enemies you'll face aboard the station. There are also synthetics and human survivors you've got to deal with. Some might be friendly, but the majority will probably be looking to take advantage of you and your resources. Knowing your enemies before engaging with them is a strong tool.

Darkness is your ally.

Though the darkness in game might terrify you, it's actually your friend. All enemies in the game struggle with night vision, so be sure to do anything that takes time – rewiring, hacking, etc – with the assistance of darkness.

Use the right tools for the job.

Another tip regarding tools, be sure to use your equipment at the right time(s). You're not going to pull a door hack off when a Xenomorph in standing right behind you.
