The Playstation 4 is getting a lot more games very soon, of very particular types. They just announced 12 new indies to join the system’s roster. They also revealed plans to bring more free to play games to it, following the success of Warframe.
Let’s get that one out real quick. Warframe was a launch game for the console, and has been downloaded over 2 million times. The game is monetizing at least as well as comparable F2P games on PC, and obviously, Sony has taken notice. They will be bringing more games like it to the platform, with hopes that it can replicate that performance.
And now, let’s take a quick look at the Magic Twelve:
1. Spelunky
You already know what this game is. If you already own it on PS3 and/or Vita, you get this for free.
2. Nidhogg
Nidhogg is an insane reframe of the fighting game genre, a sidescrolling fencing game that’s all pixelated and chiptuney.
3. Skulls of the Shogun
A turn based tactical game, in the same vein as Advance Wars, but with a cartooney ghost samurai theme.
4. Axiom Verge
This one’s a Metroidvania through and through developed thanks to Sony’s Pub Fund.
5. Chasm
Chasm is a procedurally generated RPG platformer, with the prerequisite 16-bit style.
6. Escape Goat 2
A hilarious puzzle platformer where you play a goat rescuing his sheep friends.
7. Starwahl: Just The Tip
Wonderful name, right? This one is another throwback four player competitive game, this time perhaps taking cues from Williams’ Joust. You play narwahls in space tagging each other by hitting each other with just the tip of your horns.
8. Jamestown Plus
Jamestown is a cooperative shmup retaining that arcade sprite shmup aesthetic. Jamestown Plus brings new content with it to PS4, including new ships, levels, even an entire new chapter.
9. Drifter
An open sandbox space trading game, with a procedurally generated galaxy filled with thousands of star systems.
10. Source
Another Metroidvania style game, this time going the first person perspective CG graphics route, and a look reminiscent of Tron.
11. Apotheon
A sidescrolling platformer themed around ancient Greek pottery art. No, not just ancient Greece, but the art from their pots. It’s actually a very stylish look.
12. Ironclad Tactics
A tactical card game set in the Civil War if the Civil War was populated by robots. Don’t expect much soul searching on the nature of conflict in this one, it’s cards and robots.
