Square Enix: Final Fantasy 15 is ‘Quite Far Into Development’

February 13, 2014 by Stephen Daly

The game has been given ‘high priority’ says series producer Yoshinori Kitase.

Speaking to VideoGamer, Final Fantasy series producer Yoshinori Kitase has said that Final Fantasy 15 is "quite far into development" adding that the game has been "given a very high priority".

Asked to comment on the status of both Final Fantasy 15 and Kingdom Hearts 3 he explaind:

"We can't give too much information but certainly looking at Final Fantasy 15, it's not as if it's in competition with Kingdom Hearts 3 for resources or anything like that. It's quite far into development now and it is being given a very high priority within the company itself, but that doesn't mean Kingdom Hearts isn't."

Both games were officially revealed during Sony's E3 press conference last year but Final Fantasy 15 was originally announced as Final Fantasy Versus 13 in 2006. Despite the name change, Kitase says not much has changed in terms of the game's story:

"Right from the start when we first it announced it as Versus 13, the game itself was backed up by the same Crystal legend: the Fabulla Nova Crystallis mythology that underpins the whole of the 13 series.

"So even though it's not necessarily the same universe or the same game, they're all linked and underpinned by the backdrop of that legend. Now it's moved on – obviously the title's been changed to Final Fantasy 15 – but that hasn't actually changed. The story and the world is still going to be linked and backed up by that. So yes, there is the link between 13 and 15 and they both share that mythology as a backdrop and a starting point."

Neither game has a release date but are currently planned for both PS4 and Xbox One.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13 is out now in North America and will be release tomorrow in Europe for PS3 and Xbox 360 while Final Fantasy X/X-2 Remaster HD is set for launch on PS3 and Vita on March 18th. Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn is headed to PS4 on April 14th and is currently available on PC and PS3.
