Pixel Piracy Developer Encourages Players to Pirate the Game

December 3, 2013 by Stephen Daly

Developers want to offer a safe environment in which to torrent their game.

The developers of Pixel Piracy have taken an unusual step – they're actually encouraging gamers to pirate their game on their website by providing a link to official torrent.

On Reddit, Alexander Poysky wrote the following message:

"We are letting those who want to pirate our game do so on our main site… for free so that people who would use other less savory methods won’t get any problems. There are many ways to support us that don’t entail using money so please by all means try the game out, and let others know about us if you enjoy!"

While a message on their website notes that "we aren't idiots, we aren't high."

The developers added:

"We believe that anyone who wants to pirate our game will do so anyways, and feel it's a much safer bet to offer those people the official link to our game in hopes that they keep their computer's virus free."

The rogue-like pirate simulator is normally on sale for $10-15 and is currently going through the Steam Greenlight process if you want to support them there. However:

"Not everything is about money, and we want to thank those that pirate our title and actually give them the opportunity to do so with our blessing, while giving them an opportunity to actually make good on the piracy itself."

It's certainly an unusual step but it's encouraging to see a developer with so much faith in their game that they're willing to let people play it for free in a bid to attract more players.
