Sony’s PlayStation Classic Console Continues To Drop In Price

July 4, 2019 by Dennis Patrick

Gamers can now purchase a unit for $24.99.

The classic console line was quite popular with the Nintendo Entertainment System and Super Nintendo Entertainment Systems came to the market. These systems offer gamers a miniaturized console that mimics the original hardware though instead of the games actually being physically inserted into the console, the games are pre-loaded in the device making it more of a plug-and-play style system. With these two consoles sparking a trend, there were companies quick to follow suit and one of those was Sony with their original PlayStation console platform. The system was rather hyped up as gamers waited to hear what video game titles would be included in the mix.

If you enjoyed the Sony PlayStation console, you know that there is a massive backlog of video game titles that really made the system a huge seller. So as Sony announced the games that were coming onto the system, there was plenty of disappointment with several titles that gamers once thought were going to be included were not present in the official game listings. Likewise, the system came with the original controller that lacked analog controls which made certain games hard to overcome. In the addition of the system coming in at $99.99, the classic console was quick to be dropped by gamers and pre-orders were quickly canceled.

PlayStation Classic Video Games Lineup
  • Battle Arena Toshinden
  • Cool Boarders 2
  • Destruction Derby
  • Final Fantasy VII
  • Grand Theft Auto
  • Intelligent Qube
  • Jumping Flash
  • Metal Gear Solid
  • Mr Driller
  • Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee
  • Rayman
  • Resident Evil Director’s Cut
  • Revelations: Persona
  • Ridge Racer Type 4
  • Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo
  • Syphon Filter
  • Tekken 3
  • Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six
  • Twisted Metal
  • Wild Arms

As a result, when the system did finally launch, it wasn’t very long before the console was discounted in order for marketplaces to move units. These discounts continued to occur and now we’re finding that Best Buy is dropping the console price point all the way down to $24.99 which means that if you were holding out on purchasing a PlayStation Classic for a cheaper price then you may find this to be a great opportunity to jump on the platform.

While the system may not have the biggest video game titles available from the system and lacks the analog controls, it still makes for a decor piece for your game room and if you dig around it looks as if some gamers were able to crack the system and add additional titles from the PlayStation game catalog.
