All the classics are back. After a time-skip to the future in MK10, Mortal Kombat 11 takes a back-to-basics approach with its first characters — Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Raiden were some of the first characters to get reveals, and a whole roster of yesteryear’s heroes are about to jump onto the Mortal Kombat 11 train. Shao Kahn, Baraka, Sonya Blade, and Skarlet are just a few of the previously-playable fighters that are making a comeback, and there are sure to be plenty more revealed before MK11‘s April 2019 release date.
This is a big change from MK10, which pushed strong for new blood in this long-running fighting game franchise. Instead of reinventing the wheel, the new Mortal Kombat is here to provide face-crushing fatalities and lots of variation for each individual character. Customizable gear is making the transition from NetherRealm’s previous fighter Injustice 2, with the addition of special moves you can swap out for every playable character.
There’s still a lot we don’t know — but follow this page and we’ll update the roster with every new character announcement.
Confirmed Characters
- Baraka
- Geras [NEW]
- Raiden
- Scorpion
- Shao Kahn [DLC – Pre-order Bonus]
- Skarlet
- Sonya Blade
- Sub-Zero
Sonya Blade returns, and interestingly is voiced by retired UFC fighter Ronda Rousey — giving the long-time character some real kombat credibility.
Skarlet may look new, but this crimson kunoichi has been playable before. She first appeared as a DLC character in Mortal Kombat 9 (2011). She commands the power of blood, able to draw bloody blades from her enemies and impale them.
Raiden returns. Following the events of MK10, the thunder god Raiden has gone bad. Instead of following that plot threat, MK11 begins right after the ending of MK9. Considering that Time Travel is a major component of the story, I get the feeling we’ll see plenty of time shenanigans play out, including a return trip to the evil Raiden of MK11.
Geras is an all-new fighter with diabolical time-bending abilities. Geras is a powerful opponent with tricky magical abilities — he can teleport, and command the sands of time to bend to his will. He can even stop time temporarily.
Shao Kahn returns as a non-canonical fighter. The iconic villain of MK2 and MK9 is only available as a DLC fighter, but comes free as a pre-order bonus.
Not-Yet Confirmed Characters
- Cassie Cage
- Kitana
- Kabal
- Liu Kang
- Kung Lao
Cassie Cage and Kitana reportedly appeared briefly in behind-the-scenes footage of MK11.
Kabal is believed to be visible sprinted by in the gameplay reveal trailer. Kabal is known for his super-speed antics, and the figure shown running past our hero is masked — just like Kabal.
Liu Kang and Kung Lao both appear in the MK11 story trailer above. These old-hat heroes have been in almost every entry, but they’re not yet confirmed as playable characters.
