Crunch Time For Red Dead Redemption Meant 100 Hour Work Weeks

October 15, 2018 by Dennis Patrick

The crunch time is real for Red Dead Redemption 2.

All eyes are on Red Dead Redemption 2, one of the most anticipated video games of all year. Now that we’re nearing its official release, we’ve been receiving brand new information terms of both gameplay and the work that went into the title. For instance, we now know that developers had a serious amount of crunch time to go through in order to get the game ready for launch. As it turns out, some developers went through over a hundred hours a week in order to turn out the game.

In a recent interview between Rockstars Dan Houser and Vulture,  it was noted that developers had a crunch time of a hundred hours per week. This game was a big undertaking and it included plenty of content for developers to go through including 300,000 animations and 500,000 lines of dialogue. However, that all totaled out to be a game that would take players over sixty hours to complete.

We all have heard about crunch time when it comes to video game development with workers putting in a ton of time and spending late hours trying to wrap up their project so it can finally make its release date. While that’s a ton of time to work on a project, it looks like the team is better than ever when it came to the production.

Dan made mention of producer Leslie Benzies who had previously worked with Rockstar Games before being let go. This has resulted in a lawsuit with over a hundred million dollars on the line, but with his departure, Dan noted that the team has never worked better together than on Red Dead Redemption 2. Currently the game is set to release on October 26, 2018, for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One platforms.
