Mega Man X is a series with some serious highs and lows. This isn’t like the original Mega Man games — those games, for the most part, were consistently quality. Mega Man X is a little different. There are true masterpieces in this collect, and there are some real stinkers too. It all depends on the game, and today we’re running through all eight titles to show you how the games evolved.

To illustrate the wild changes in graphics and presentation that are present throughout this decade-spanning series, we’re playing through the first level of every game. It doesn’t always go well, but when you’re replaying old games and trying to complete them as quickly as possible, things are bound to go wrong. Even when they’re all (pretty much) really, really easy.

The series spans three console generations — starting on SNES, it jumps to PS1 before finally ending on PS2. Some might say that the series has a clear downward trajectory, but it isn’t as simple as that. There are spikes of creativity in the later games, even if at least one is just abysmally bad. If you’re a fan of the series, you already know which one I’m talking about.

From the beginning of the first game, the series goes on to add a lot of new features to the mix — a dash for Mega Man is first, then air-dashes, animated cutscenes, multiple characters, and much more. It’s a pretty wild ride, but we’re still in agreement that Mega Man X 1 is probably the best game in the series. If you’re not a super-fan, it’s probably best just to purchase the first 4 and skip the last 4. We won’t judge.
