Devil May Cry HD Collection First Impressions: A Respectable Port for Fans of the Franchise

March 15, 2018 by Jordan Biazzo

3 great games for both fans and newcomers alike!

Game: Devil May Cry HD Remaster Collection

Publisher: Capcom

Developer: Capcom

Reviewed: PS4

Devil May Cry is an established franchise within the gaming community; whether you played them or not, you most definitely have heard about them – for good or bad.

The game made its mark in the hack and slash genre early on and had players wanting more of it. So here we are, with the second HD port of the Devil May Cry collection on the latest gaming generation console. How does it hold up? Is it worth your time to revisit it for the umpteenth time or experience it for the first? Let’s find out!

If you’re playing Devil May Cry HD collection for the first time, you will instantly realize how old the game actually is. The first title released back in the PS2 era in 2001, so this game has aged. Did it age well? Eh, it would depend on the individual, but you could definitely tell it is dated.

Fixed cameras, dated graphics, and sort of clunky combat all are present in this HD collection. It’s not too bad once you get used to how the game runs, it’s most similar to the early Resident Evil titles. If you aren’t in for the ride of older camera angles and whatnot, I wouldn’t say skip this game completely, but it is worth noting.

The story follows Dante, Vergil, and more eccentric characters all with their own quirks and unique characteristic traits. Devil May Cry is not only known for its gameplay, but its cast of characters. This HD collection does capture the characters at their best, thanks to the collection hitting 1080p resolution.

The gameplay, on the other hand, is centered around killing demons with guns and your swords. Combo them with both and pull off quicker fights. The game starts to click with you shortly and the fun of it never leaves. All three titles in the collection have their strong points, fans pegged Devil May Cry 3 as the best, and 1 a close follow up, but that is all opinions. All three games are fun to play and have their pros and cons.

The collection is barebones for the most part. Back in the day DLC wasn’t really a thing so the game mostly launched as is. So as this HD collection released, there’s not much to play besides the three games. That’s to be expected, but maybe gamers were expecting some more additions to this specific collection.

However, since this is basically the PS3 and Xbox 360 port, and its price sits at $29.99, there isn’t much fans could expect besides the game; which is not a bad thing.

Devil May Cry HD Collection is a cool addition to the current generation consoles. If you’re new to the franchise or a longtime fan, the game will not disappoint you. It keeps its runtime fun and entertaining for the most part.

The collection makes me wonder, since this is essentially the same HD collection from PS3 and Xbox 360, if Capcom is gearing up for a Devil May Cry comeback. The rebooted series did receive a positive response, perhaps they will continue, perhaps they won’t. Either way, this collection is worth its asking price.

Did you pick up Devil May Cry Hd collection for the current gen? Thinking about replaying them? Let us know in the comments below!
