John Cena, the wrestler-turned-actor is currently in negotiations to star as Duke Nukem, in the absolutely unnecessary move spin-off of the video game by Paramount.
Platinum Dunes, the company run by Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller, will produce the movie. As of now, no director is currently on board for the film, and the search for a writer will begin once there is confirmation of whether or not Cena is on board.
The film was originally supposed to be set up at Dimension Films, unfortunately, the rights lapsed, allowing Paramount to pick it up from Gearbox.
John Cena has previously been involved in a decent amount of work from Paramount where he starred studio’s Daddy Home 2, which managed to gross over $100 million domestically. He is also set to appear in Bumblebee, the studio’s Transformers spinoff that Micheal Bay has produced.
Duke Nukem follows the story of Duke, a mashup of 80’s heroes as he intends to save the world from Alien threat. It’s an iconic title first originating as a sidescroller back in 1991, it then went on to gain massive popularity in 1996 with Duke Nukem 3D, one of the first 3D first-person shooters. 2011’s Duke Nukem release was a dismal failure – which was made even worse considering it had spent 15 years in production.
