A new Kickstarter campaign has appeared for a PC game called Mage's Initiation. But before you think, “Ugh, another Kickstarter,” and click away, look at who's behind this one. Himalaya Studios is the team that remade several of the awesome King's Quest games so that modern gamers would be able to play them without wincing. These guys definitely know their stuff when it comes to this kind of retro-styled point-and-click adventure.
Apparently, Himalaya Studios is “working hard to provide a nostalgic experience, reminiscent of that golden era of 2D Sierra adventures circa 1993-1994.” If that sounds like something you'd be interested in playing, it's worth reading up on the game to see if you'd be willing to put in a pledge. It's going to be set in medieval times and involve magical combat. You play an initiate called D'arc, who has been given three tasks to complete that will take him through places like “a goblin-infested forest” and “the peaks of Flyteria, a valley of winged warriors once dedicated to protection of the human town”.
Naturally, the story doesn't sound overly unique, but you come to expect that with these kinds of games. And given the studio's experience with the King's Quest series you can at least expect that the story will be told with a great deal of humour. Besides, the combination of point-and-click play with a class-based magical combat system sounds pretty interesting.
Himalaya Studios is looking for $65,000, though if the campaign hits $120,000 the team will also port the game to Android and iOS. They've already raised $26,831 at the time of writing, but if you want to show your support go ahead and add your pledge to the collection.
