nGees Is This Week’s Brand New, Bite-Sized Android Driven Console

February 12, 2013 by Matt Hawkins

But do we really need one?

Say hello to the nGees, which according to Joystick is pronounced "in jeez". Much like the Ouya, the GameStick, and the JXD S7300 HD Gamepad2 before it, the nGees is an Android driven alternative to the traditional video game system.

Given how increasingly crowded this relatively brand new marketplace has become, it's going to take something special for the nGees to stand out. And does it? Well… at the very least, it boasts many of the same features of competing Android consoles, and thusly makes many of the same promises.

Though there are a few new ones to speak of. Instead of just playing games, it can also access your music collection, stream movies, handle video conferencing, and even productivity apps. Basically, it's a multimedia machine instead of just being a console.

Plus, as Joystiq also notes, the remote control appears to have motion-sensing capabilities. Though it is not mentioned anywhere, so it could just be our imaginations. And the design of the console is admittedly quite nice. Not nearly as sexy as the GameStick, but it's definitely cooler looking than the Ouya.

And, that's about it? Can the marketplace sustain another machine of in its category? BTW, it’s also worth noting that none of the aforementioned machines have even shipped to date, let alone been manufactured, with the Ouya being the lone exception (though it’s only in the hands of developers at the moment).

Meaning that it is perhaps a bit foolhardy for so many parties to jump into a marketplace that technically doesn’t even exist yet. Though the numbers on the its Indiegogo page is all one really needs to know; the goal is a relatively modest $395,000, and of yet, it has only raised $591. Ouch. Though with 51 days left, anything is possible.
