Sonic Mania May Receive Physical Release

April 7, 2017 by Dennis Patrick

Expect plenty of re-imagined versions of levels from past Sonic titles.

Fans of the original Sonic the Hedgehog video games have been ecstatic over Sega’s upcoming Sonic Mania. The video game is a new 2D platformer that resembles much of what Sonic looked like during the days of Sega’s home consoles the Sega Genesis and Mega Drive, depending on where you lived.

The video game has truly been crafted for the fans and we got a bit more information when it comes to the title through an interview with Sega Product Manager Jim Dyer over at Twinfinite. Throughout the interview, the subject over Sonic Mania came up in which we learned that Sega went into the video game strictly for the fans who may pick it up for nostalgic reasons along with those who may recognize the Sonic character.

“Sonic Mania is for the fans. The plan with Sonic Forces, bringing Forces out soon after, is that it is a Sonic game for everyone. Sonic Mania is one for fans, either because of nostalgia or for people who just love the brand, or for kids that recognize the character.”

Jim Dyer also noted that the upcoming video game will have plenty of re-imagined versions of levels we may have seen from previous Sonic video game titles along with levels that were scrapped completely in the past. Furthermore, you can expect to see several nods and easter eggs from previous works within the Sonic franchise.

Likewise, a physical release for Sonic Mania is not completely out of the question, though right now Sega is simply waiting to see how everything turns out.

“We would love to do one. We want the community to know that we are listening, and at SXSW they suggested a lot of interest in us following through with a physical release. But we’re also aware that audience approves of anything Sonic related, so while we are listening and it is something we’d like to do, at this stage we are going to see how it goes.”

Sonic Mania is expected to launch later this year for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC platforms.
