Ben Rose of Irving, Texas was playing Fallout 4 in his apartment when a car crashed through the wall and hit him. The accident fractured his vertebra and sliced his Achilles tendon. Rose believes that if it weren’t for Fallout 4 and his special gaming chair, he would be in a lot worse condition.
“Cars versus people don’t really end up well. So I really thought it was over,” said Rose to CBS DFW. “Everybody asks were you walking in your parking lot? Or were you in your car? What do you mean she drove through your apartment?”
“The chair is what saved me, without a doubt. That took the impact. It pushed me out of the way. It kept me from going under the car,” he said.
Local police believe the driver accidentally hit the accelerator while trying to back out of a parking spot. The driver does not have insurance, leaving Rose responsible for damages and medical bills.
Friends set up a GoFundMe page for Rose, and the gaming community has swept in to help. Gamers and industry members alike have donated to help Rose with all the costs associated with the accident. Pete Hines, the Bethesda Vice President of PR/Marketing, has donated $4,000. As of the time of this writing, the total raised so far is $10,430 out of a $10,000 goal. While the goal has been met, Rose’s medical costs aren’t solid at this point, as the GoFundMe page says.
“This goal, while ambitious, is really just the tip of the iceberg. The amount that will be owed in medical bills is unknown at this point. However, considering EMS transport, scans, x-rays, surgery, and a few nights in the hospital, it is safe to say that costs will be high — even before any follow-up treatment or therapy.”
Hopefully Rose has a speedy recovery, and thanks to the gaming community, a low financial toll from this horrible accident.
