Just this month, Ubisoft announced Assassin's Creed 3's first DLC drop as part of the game's season pass. Titled "The Tyranny of King Washington," this DLC is supposed to give us an alternate history on George Washington's doings and how Connor moves in to stop it.
Fortunately — or unfortunately — depending on your point-of-view, this expansion won't be part of the game's canon at all. Instead, the DLC is being developed by Ubisoft in a "more whimsical manner" and something they think won't "fracture" the playerbase.
In an interview with OXM, Lead Designer Steve Masters had this to say:
For me, the DLC has always been a touchy thing for putting important story moments into…Ultimately it fractures the audience and makes it really difficult for people to keep up with what is the canon of the series.
For us, we want to have a little fun with it, and have a less serious experience, a less earnest experience, and setting it in an alternate history environment gives us room and freedom to play around with things in a more whimsical manner.
We think people are going to enjoy it, have fun with it – we've just got to remember it's not part of the canon, it's just there as something for players to enjoy.
Currently, the expansion has no standalone price and release date. But we will, of course, update you once Ubisoft has revealed it.
Assassin's Creed 3 is set for release next week on the PS3 and Xbox 360.
