Reading George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels captures the imagination in ways that few other books can. One feels like an observer in a world populated by real people, who live in real castles, leading real lives—if not ones filled with strife, struggles, and a fear of death.
One does not simply take a stroll down King’s Road, but rides upon a destrier towards a castle hundreds of miles distant. Such is the land in Westeros—vast and beautiful, but fraught by turmoil. It is real, and it is big.
Thanks to the possibilities offered by Minecraft and the efforts of the modders at Westeroscraft, it may soon be possible to make your way from the Red Mountains of Dorne to well beyond the Wall in the North. You’d no doubt want to make some stops along the way to catch a glimpse of the Iron Throne within King’s Landing, and explore the Vale of Arryn with the Eyrie at its peak.
WesterosCraft is more than just a simple recreation of a few Westerosian locations in Minecraft. It intends to provide an experience that’s faithful to the lands depicted in Martin’s writing in full, allowing you to walk the continent from end to end.
To get the full experience, you’ll need to first download the WesterosCraft texture pack and then connect to mc.westeroscraft.com. If you’d like to help out in the construction of Westeros, the folks running the server are taking applications for builders.
In the meantime, check out these screenshots of WesterosCraft.
