There has been a lot of buzz surrounding Sonic this past year, as his 25th birthday came upon us. To celebrate that, the Sega staff took to the House of Blues in San Diego. It was livestreamed for people to watch on Sonic’s Twitch channel, and the gaming community tuned in from all over in order to see what was the next game in the series.
After sitting through a dance party for the first hour, Aaron Webber (who runs Sonic’s Twitter account) came onto the stage to reveal Sonic Mania.
The project was developed in a collaboration between SEGA, Headcannon, Christian Whitehead, and PagodaWestGames. It’s a 2D classic Sonic type of adventure that’s both an HD remake of old levels, while also adding entirely new zones into the overall mix. From what we see in the video, there’s the good ol’ Green Hill zone, in addition to what seems like some sort of Cityscape level. Players will have the option of picking from Sonic, Tails, or Knuckles for their game playthroughs. According to the trailer, there’s some kind of revamped Drop Dash mechanic involved in this title.
Sonic Mania is set to come out in Spring 2017 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. For updates in the meantime, check out Sonic’s website, Twitter, and Facebook.
