Sony may be facing a crisis with used PS5 consoles.

GameDeveloper reported on retailers like GameStop, Amazon, Best Buy and Walmart raising prices on used PS5 consoles for as much as $ 1,400 or $ 1,500. This is a price increase of 60 – 66 % compared to new PS5 consoles and double the price at launch.
Derek Strickland shared a shocking explanation for all this:
GameStop has listed used PS5 Pro disc models for $1500. Why is this happening?
Check the model number 1000046529. These are hackable Pros with earlier firmware versions.
We reported on the PS being close to getting jailbroken last month. As Modded Warfare explained in a recent YouTube, these all happened since that jailbreak:
- The list of playable PS5 game ‘backups’ was updated, up to Marvel’s Wolverine
- PS5 emulators like AnyPS5 and kytyPS5 can now load and run PS5 games on PC
- Emulators like RetroArch, RCPS3, PS5SX2, and Eden Switch are now running on PS5
It isn’t clear if Sony demanded to raise these prices to discourage jailbreaks, or if GameStop et al. are doing it for profit. But Sony is definitely not happy with all of this happening.
