It was over a year ago when Simu Liu claimed that he would try to make a Sleeping Dogs movie happen after the project with Timo Tjahjanto and Donnie Yen did not go into production. Today, he makes a big update.
He shared this update on Twitter:
okay, here it is. we’re moving along really well, we have a director, and a production company, and a REAL path forward.
we’re just in the dealmaking process with the game studio rn (which is a total fan moment for me bc i love SquareEnix). your support is fuelling us all!
It’s an interesting time for Simu Liu to be dealmaking with Square Enix. Liu, of course, is part of the MCU, and was just featured in the latest Avengers: Doomsday trailer, playing Shang-Chi.
Square Enix is also currently working with Disney, as they are making a new animated series for Disney+ and Disney Channel together. Does this mean Square Enix is more likely to take Simu Liu’s pitch? Should Simu cash in some favors at Disney to make this deal?
Hopefully we won’t have to wait that much longer to hear Square Enix said yes.
