We have a surprising little rumor about Xbox’s plans for physical game discs.

John Linneman said this in the latest episode of the DF Direct Q&A:
What’s interesting, Rich, um, one thing I’d heard from a couple sort of sources, and this is just kind of like, you know, potential rumory stuff, but at least before the current Xbox reset, I don’t know where it is now, it sounds like Microsoft was actually very much going to continue disc support, not because they valued retail disc sales, but because they wanted to like ensure that all your Xbox games were still playable on new Xboxes.
John went on to speculate that Xbox could offer an external disc drive for the future. But of course, this would be exciting news because of what Xbox’s competition is planning.
It’s now over a month since Sony announced they would stop making physical game discs. While there’s apparent discourse on how much backlash Sony has received for it, there would be no dispute on how it would look if Xbox suddenly reemerged as the champion of disc games and physical media.
