There’s a really surprising rumor that has come up regarding Borderlands 4.

EpicNNG shared the rumor on Twitter:

Been hearing rumours that since launch, Borderlands 4 has outsold Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7

No idea if it’s true, take with a grain of salt. Massively impressive if confirmed though.

I for one do not currently have a source who can confirm this, but if you’d like to- feel free to reach out. I keep all sourced anonymous.

Wait…. I Thought Borderlands 4 Flopped?

There was no real news that Borderlands 4 flopped, but we would not be surprised if you got that impression.

Circana reported last month that Borderlands 4 was the 4th best-selling game of the year in the US, behind Battlefield 6, NBA 2K26, and Monster Hunter Wilds.

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick told investors in their latest financial meeting that unit sales were ‘softer than we would have liked.’

Lastly, fans have been discoursing about the game being ‘polarizing’ and pocket watching their DAU and MAU metrics. These are the kinds of things you hear about a game that has disappointed, if it hasn’t completely flopped.

But EpicNNG also heard differently. He reiterated this point in response to a question on Twitter:

From what I heard a month or so ago, BL4 performing well wasn’t a PR stunt. It really is the best performing title in the franchise.

2025: The Year Of Bad Video Game Vibes And Delusions

We don’t know if you have noticed it yourselves, but it’s clear that there is an undercurrent of negativity rolling around the industry.

But what you may not have noticed is how little that negativity matches reality. So far we have seen people spread negative sentiment about the Nintendo Switch 2, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Ghost of Yotei, Mario Kart World, etc.

Everything we listed above has been very successful, but you would not know it if you took online sentiment as gospel.

It will be hard to verify claims that Borderlands 4 outsold Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7. For us to know for sure, both Microsoft and Take-Two Interactive would have to be willing to disclose their sales figures, including net bookings.

We would also need to have enough information to sort out Game Pass’ impact on Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7’s unit sales on revenue. For those who don’t know, Microsoft uses hours played as a metric to decide if a game on Game Pass has made enough money back for Microsoft, as well as the game’s respective publisher and developer.

But since we know that’s highly unlikely to happen, we will have to give or take EpicNNG’s claims as it is. Maybe other reliable sources will corroborate that this happened. But Take-Two and Gearbox being quiet about their success does not ‘debunk’ that they have actually been successful.
